Looking to rehome your pug?
We recognize that various circumstances may lead families to seek rescue assistance, and we understand how difficult this decision can be. It is a very hard decision to make and even harder to actually do – but sometimes, things just don’t work out. We want you to feel confident trusting us to find your pug a safe, loving, pug-obsessed home where they’ll be cherished and cared for the way they deserve.
The surrender process
Based on urgency and foster home space availability, Bay Area Pug Project can take in owner-surrendered pugs. Please understand that because we have very limited resources, it's necessary for us to prioritize the dogs we take into rescue. Shelter dogs in danger of being euthanized are given first and top priority. Next are dogs in need of immediate health care that their owners cannot provide. Then, the rest of owner surrenders are considered. Please be patient with us, and we will do our best to work with you to ensure the safety and well-being of your dog.
We know that surrendering your dog is a very difficult decision, but sometimes, it is the only one to make. If you choose to surrender your dog, you are required to sign a surrender contract. Your signature on this legally-binding contract represents a permanent decision on your part and gives full ownership of the dog to Bay Area Pug Project. This allows us to provide veterinary care and down the road, legally adopt out the dog to a carefully pre-screened 'forever' home. Please note: We consider adoptions through our organization to be closed, meaning that we do not reveal the identities of either the surrendering or adopting parties. This ensures your privacy, as well as the privacy of the adopter, will be protected.

It’s nice to send items that’ll make the pug feel at home through the transition - so if they’ve got a pet bed or a favorite toy, those are great to send along.
We do request you send some of the food they’re used to eating, if you have some.

If you choose to rehome your pug independently, please be extremely cautious, especially when using platforms like Craigslist or Facebook. The wrong placement can mean the difference between a safe, loving home and an uncertain fate. Some individuals seek to buy dogs for resale, and there’s no guarantee of the care your pug will receive.
By entrusting your pug to a rescue organization, you ensure they are placed in a vetted, responsible, and loving home.

The decision to surrender your pug to rescue is final.
Requests to return pugs surrendered to rescue will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the Board of Directors. In addition, the rescue must be reimbursed for any incurred expenses.
