Adoption fees

When you adopt from Bay Area Pug Project, you will receive all of the medical records we have for the dog you take home. Most, if not all, dogs will be adopted fixed, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. We understand that rescue pricing may be higher than you might expect. Please note that shelters are able to adopt out dogs for much lower due to county funding sources. Rescues rely on donations to pay vet costs, and adoption fees do not cover the entirety of a dog’s care in our rescue.

Why adopt and not shop?

Adopting gives a pug in need a second chance. If you find one at a shelter, please consider taking it home! Just know that their medical needs and temperament may not yet be fully understood, as the shelter environment is extremely stressful for a breed like this. At a rescue, dogs have time to decompress, receive breed-specific medical care, and settle into foster homes, where we can better understand their personalities and help you find the right fit.

If you’re looking at our adoption fees and wondering why you shouldn’t just buy a puppy from a breeder, remember that puppies still require significant veterinary care to grow up healthy. Those costs add up, so factor them into your decision. If you choose to buy, please work with an ethical breeder, not someone advertising or on Craigslist or social media. Dogs purchased from ethical breeders do not contribute to the shelter overpopulation crisis; they are usually microchipped to the breeder, and their owners sign contracts to return the dog to the breeder if needed.

California has a backyard breeding epidemic, and rescues across the country see the consequences every day. Puppies are sold or “rehomed” online without basic veterinary care, vaccinations, deworming, or proper socialization. When you buy from these sellers, you’re funding a cycle of breeding dogs for profit that contributes to the shelter crisis.
